In 2009, I left Seoul at 18 to study Film & TV at New York University. I'd studied English my whole life — even took the SATs to get in. But nothing prepares you for actually living in a language that isn't yours.
The first night in my NYU dorm, I sat on an unfamiliar bed, staring at a city that felt impossibly big. I didn't know how to open a bank account. I didn't know where to buy bedsheets. I didn't even know how to use the subway.
New York was thrilling — but also deeply lonely. I was 20, far from family, navigating everything in a language that wasn't mine. Visa paperwork. Landlord disputes. Doctor visits where I couldn't explain my symptoms.
I wished someone — anyone — had just told me what to do. Step by step. In a language I understood. With the empathy of someone who'd been through it.
